Sybyl Atwood, the Resource Center’s Program Director for Volunteer Services, has celebrated her 40th anniversary working in Flint. A “Salute to Sybyl” celebration dinner was held Thursday, May 11, 2006 to honor Atwood’s dedication and commitment to her work.
“I can’t believe it’s been that long, “ said Atwood. “It’s been a wonderful experience getting to know the people of Flint and working side-by-side with them to make the community a better place.”
Atwood came to Flint from Toledo, Ohio in 1965 and was hired to run the newly formed Volunteer Bureau on February 14, 1966. The Volunteer Bureau was a project of the Junior League of Flint. Atwood served as Director of the Volunteer Bureau (and later the Voluntary Action Center) for many years. She is now one of two Program Directors at the Resource Center and oversees the Center’s Volunteer Services programming, including the weekly “Volunteer Here” column, the annual Holiday Wish List project, and Andy Heller’s “Need has a face” feature.
