Flint resident Andrew Younger, an AmeriCorps member at the Resource Center, is a finalist for one of the annual Governor’s Service Awards, sponsored by the Michigan Community Service Commission and Governor John Engler. Younger was nominated in the National Service Program Member category for his outstanding leadership in planning and coordinating the Holiday Wishlist project from October 1999 to January 2000. Younger’s efforts resulted in the recruitment of 1,501 donors who gave 87,000 gifts and $479,000 in financial contributions to more than 100,000 Flint-area residents.

"I want to help improve the city of Flint, a major concern that I have had since I was in junior high," said Younger. "I am aware of the tremendous potential that Flint possesses, and it is my intent to help Flint come closer to realizing this potential."

Along with the Holiday Wishlist, Younger has been involved with other volunteer activities. He created and ran a summer youth program for neighborhood children. Younger also worked with members of various communities on local environmental justice issues in southeast Michigan, and helped create and strengthen neighborhood coalitions. Younger has proven his dedication to the city of Flint through his exceptional volunteer services with AmeriCorps and the Resource Center.

The final recipients of the 2000 Governor’s Service Awards will be announced in Lansing on May 18.
