The award is named after Sybyl M. Atwood, who for more than 40 years was the program director for Volunteer and Information Services at Resource Genesee and its predecessor organizations.
Atwood was known as the area’s “grande dame” of charity work and helped thousands of local people in need before her death in 2007. Mentoring was central to her work, and she is remembered by many for her can-do, no-excuses approach to helping others. A committee chose the winners from 12 nominees. This is the first time the award has been shared.
ELGA Credit Union and HealthPlus sponsored the award presentation at the December 8 Holiday Luncheon which Resource Genesee held at the Riverfront Banquet Center in downtown Flint.
His nomination described Kenneth Foyder as: a volunteer with the Weiss Advocacy Center Foyder works with the most vulnerable children caught in the judicial system who have no voice. As an advocate for children he has been relentless while maintaining his integrity in a positive encouraging manner. He works with the children to redirect their negative behavior and encourages positive relationships in order to reunite families.
The nomination for Charles Tommasulo indicated that Tommasulo: is a dynamic leader and a dedicated professional, advocating for the enhancement of the quality of life for all in Genesee County, but most especially for Senior Citizens. Chuck has been the Executive Director of Family Service Agency of Mid-Michigan for the past twenty years. His grant writing skills and vision for Family Service Agency have sustained the agency and its excellent service delivery. In addition to his work at Family Service Agency, he teaches and conducts research in the social work field. His guidance has helped numerous students find positive direction and accomplish their educational goals.
Congratulations to both men!
