Free Tax Help for Low to Moderate Income Earners

Resource Genesee is part of the Genesee County Tax Assistance & Financial Services Coalition. The Coalition provides free income tax preparation services from February-April each year. Specially trained volunteers prepare your taxes for free if you qualify. Families with income under $50,000 qualify for free services.

In particular, they want to make sure you take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) if you are eligible. The EITC is a tax break for working families and individuals designed to reduce the tax burden and supplement the wages of low to moderate income workers.

Millions of dollars in tax refunds goes unclaimed each year by people who did not know they qualified for the EITC. For more information on the tax credit, visit the state EITC web site at www.michiganeic.org/about.

• Are the sites listed below full? Check the AARP sites listed here. No income restrictions on AARP tax preparation services, however some services are limited to the residents who live on site. Check the list carefully.
• Do you live in subsidized housing? AARP provides tax preparation services for many public housing residents on site. Check the schedule and contacts here.
